University outpatient clinic for muscle disorders

The university outpatient clinic for muscle disorders offers in close cooperation with primary care physicians or other specialists diagnostic expertise and long-term care for patients suffering from muscle diseases. Transferal is possible from all medical specialties. We have particular emphasis in the field of muscular dystrophies. Patients with immunologically mediated muscle disorders such as polymyositis or myasthenia gravis are also cared for in our clinic. Pharmacologically-induced myopathy is another focus of our clinical and scientific endeavor, in particular statin-induced myopathy. Statins are prescribed to millions to lower cholesterol levels and for stroke prevention. Approximately 10% of patients develop elevations of muscle enzymes with or without myalgias.

The outpatient clinic consists of an experienced and interdisciplinary team of neuromuscular specialists (Simone Spuler, MD, Prof, Ulrike Grieben, MD, Verena Schöwel, MD), physiotherapists (Elke Maron, Juliana Prügel), orthopedic surgeons (Julia Funk, MD) and cardiologists. In weekly team discussions all new patients, muscle biopsy findings and other relevant aspects are discussed. Special appointments are possible for electromyogram examinations, for neuroorthopedic or physiotherpeutical consultations and for cardiac function tests. The geneticists at the Institute for Human Genetics perform genetic counseling for our patients.
